Miko Virtanen puts in a challenge on Raith’s Kai Montagu.

Elgin’s Premier Sports campaign opened with a humbling 5-1 defeat at home to Championship side Raith Rovers.

A convincing performance for Championship side Raith Rovers saw them open their Premier Sports Cup account with a 5-1 win at Borough Briggs.

The highlight of the game from a Black and White perspective was Jack Murray’s overhead kick which briefly made it 3-1 early in the second half.

Raith Rovers started strongly and went ahead after 10 minutes when Dylan Easton won and converted a penalty.

They had a chance to make it two when Lewis Vaughan was fouled by Tom McHale in the 13th minute but the City keeper redeemed himself with a good save to deny Vaughan from 12 yards.

Vaughan rattled the crossbar with a fierce shot three minutes later.

Jai Rowe made it 2-0 with a terrific header from an Easton cross in the 37th minute.

And it was 3-0 within a minute when Tom McHale could only parry a shot and Vaughan knocked home from close range.

Elgin had to replace the injured Lyall Booth a minute before the break with Conall Ewan replacing him.

New Signing Josh O’Connor came on for Olly McDonald at half-time.

A second penalty from Dylan Easton made it 4-1 on the hour mark before Josh Mullin headed number five 18 minutes from the end.
