Youth Academy History
Elgin City FC Football Academy was established in 2007 when the Club decided to add primary aged (Junior) groups to the complement the already existing youth development programme. This proved successful with a big improvement of developing local youth players that enabled the youth squads to compete more against the other high performance teams across Scotland.
2016 marked another milestone for the Football Academy as it merged with the existing Youth Development to combine both the Junior and Youth set ups as one full pathway at the Club. This enabled more continuity and a better identity for the Club’s youth structure.
2017 the Academy then established a new programme ‘Project20’ by establishing an U20s squad to enable players to keep developing beyond 16 years of age. This squad has went on to win the North of Scotland U20s league back-to-back in seasons 2017/18 & 2018/19. These players are also put out on loan going out to Junior and Highland league teams to gain valuable experience at those respective levels.
Going forward the Academy now boast over 150 players aged from 6 to 19 years old and we still strive to develop a better structure to enable players to fulfil their potential. Our plans in the future include sourcing better training & playing facilities and offering more football opportunities such as attending major tournaments nationally and internationally.
Professional Development Phase (U18s/20s)
At this age the players showing potential will be loaned out to local Highland league and Junior Clubs to experience and develop in adult football. The players will from time to time on the first team manager’s discretion, be invited to first team training and may feature for the first team. We have seen much success over the years with our youth player’s consistently being featured in preseason games and given their chance to step up to professional level football. Current players in the first team that came through the youth academy are Brian Cameron (27), Darryl McHardy (24), Rory MacEwan (21), David Wilson (19) and most recently Aiden Sopel (19), Ashley Ballam (18), Lee Scott (18) Owen Loveland (16) and Jake Thomson (17).
Youth Development Phase (U13s, 14s/15s, 16s, 17s).
The next level we look build on top of the good habits and the basic technical skills that have been installed. Training will now increase 2-3 sessions per week including working on core strength and athleticism. They will also receive more regular games which will require travelling around Scotland as well as being invited to represent the Club at football tournaments locally and nationally.
Foundation Phase (U9s, 10s, 11s, 12s).
At this early introduction to Academy Football, the emphasis is on establishing good habits and developing basic technical skills. The players will receive two training sessions a week; one focusing on the technical aspect of the game and then another session on the tactical aspect. They will also receive games frequently as well as being invited to represent the Club at local football tournaments.
