Elgin City made a number of change from Saturday, including Tom Ritchie in goal, Connall Ewan drafted into the centre of defence, club captain Matty Cooper getting his first start of the season, and Kane Hester up front alongside Dylan Gavin.

An even first half finished goalless, with Josh Walker going closest to breaking the deadlock when he cut in from the left and fire the ball against Logan Ross’s right hand post.

The keeper got lucky when the ball richoteted back off the post and hit him, but he was able to collect the ball safely.

Two goals in the space of three minutes early in the second half swung the game firmly in Inverness’ favour with Alfie Bavidge (47) and Robbie Thompson (50) putting the visitors in command.

Paul Allan made it 3-0 from the penalty spot on the hour mark, with a penalty disputed by Elgin City.

Mark Gallagher pulled one back with a terrific shot in the 85th minute but Inverness had the last word when Bavidge made it 4-1 with another penalty.
